Why start Oakland Rockstars?
There are many club volleyball options in the Bay Area. We are an affordable choice within Oakland city limits. We are excited to make connections with families and between families to form a volleyball community that will make a positive contribution in kids’ lives and our city.
What is the difference between Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced?
Beginner - generally for ages 9-11 with little to no experience on a team (less than one year). The key components to graduating from this level are learning to move to the ball, serve over the net, and improve ball control.
Intermediate - generally for ages 11-13. Intermediate players are able to underhand serve over the net 80%+ (and working on a consistent overhand serve), accurately pass freeballs 80%+, and are eager to play "pass-set-hit" volleyball as opposed to going over on one. Intermediate players are comfortable rotating around the court, digging downballs, and returning overhand serves.
Advanced - generally for ages 13-15 with Varsity or Club experience. Advanced players can overhand serve over the net 80%+ and can control the ball. Advanced players have a basic understanding of the positions Outside Hitter, Middle Blocker, Opposite Hitter, Libero, Setter and grasp the differences between a 5-1, 6-1, and 6-2 offense.
Where can I fill out the waiver?
Here is the waiver that must be filled out for all clinic participants.
Where is the gym located?
First Covenant Church of Oakland (4000 Redwood Road, Oakland) which is located right next to the Safeway at Lincoln Square in the Redwood Heights neighborhood. When you arrive, drive all the way up the driveway and follow it as it curves to the left around an island in the parking lot. The double doors that you see on the large building lead to the gym.
If you are taking public transit, there is a 54 AC Transit bus stop on Redwood Road right in front of the church.
Can I stay rather than dropping off?
Sure! We have some seating in our gym and some tables and benches on the patio outside.
Can I drop off my other child(ren) there for you to watch as well?
We are unable to provide supervision for non-registered minors. However, siblings are welcome to stay and watch if supervised by a parent.
Do I need to be religious to attend?
No, not at all. Some of our coaches are church members, but the focus of these clinics is volleyball.
Is financial assistance available?
