18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
There are events in one’s life that are never forgotten. Mine was an unforgettable and sorrowful night, November 1992, when I received the call from Texas that my mom was in critical condition and may not make it through the night.
My mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer the summer of 1992. Being my mom’s only child, I spent that summer in Texas helping her as she went through several procedures before a diagnosis, setting up doctor’s appointments and meeting with agencies that could assist with her care. Living in California, I eventually had to return to my teaching job. As I was saying my goodbyes, I had this really strange feeling that this would be the last time that I would see my mom alive and I could also see in her eyes that she was feeling the same way. Before flying, I always say a prayer for safety to my destination but this time I prayed for my mom’s health and that we would be able to see each other again. My heart was broken throughout the three hours flight back to California.
Three months later, I received a call of my mom’s deteriorating condition. My next roadblock was being able to get a last-minute flight from California back toTexas. As always, the Lord was looking out for me. I was able to book the last seat on a flight home that was leaving the next morning. Boarding the flight, I prayed for her to hold on until I could get there but it was not meant to be.
When my plane landed, I found out that my mom, the lady that single handedly raised me to be the woman that I am today, had passed away before I could say goodbye. I was unable to tell her how much I loved and appreciated that God chose her to be my mom. Needless to say, my spirit was totally crushed. Through continued prayers, the Lord gave me the strength to make the needed arrangements as I buried my mom on her birthday. She left this world on the same day, seventy-two years later, that she entered this world. With prayers and the Lords guidance, that was my tribute to her.
I could not have done any of this without Him being by my side and guiding me through the darkest days of my life. This is my reason for choosing Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
We enjoy getting the ornament every year from FCC Kids Ministry. We have been around for a while and have accumulated so many that we bought a small tree for our front room just for them! Thanks to Teacher Sherry K and all who have helped carry on this tradition.
